Krestovka

A hidden spot on the shore of Baikal. Unknown for Western tourists.
Great hiking opportunities and Baikal views combined with visiting the sacred praying place (White Wall) and remains of the watch point.

The spot is not far from the main route (leading to the Small Sea area and Olkhon island). However, the roads are so bad and so numerous that it is easy to lose right direction (the map shows only ONE road). It's said that in summer tourists are seldom. In May, I saw nobody for 6 km around (while hiking to the White Wall)

Highlights:The War Cape.

During the Kurumchisky era (VI - XI centuries), the stone fence walls on the top of the cape served as a fort. Ancient indigenous tribe people - Kurykans (pre-Buryat nation) were watching the area and they would start the smoke fire if they saw the enemies. Several miles after, inland, there is another hill of the same height. It has a fort as well and soldiers standing by, so they could start their fire and transmit the signal further on. Nowadays, we can observe several layers of stones, walking trail leading up to the hills.

Highlights: The White Wall.

A white marble cliff with ancient drawings. Those are drawing of humans (shamans or may be aliens), birds and animals.

'The White Wall petrogliphs ... is the most unique among other
Siberian drawings. Pictures of the horn headed dancing shamans
facing the- never-calm waters of Baikal are as majestic as the lake
itself...'

PS. The present condition of drawings is painful - weathering and
graffitiing ruin the marble.
