Description of Shumak Shumak is a wild mineral spring resort tucked in a valley behind one of the Sayan mountains. According to an ancient Buryat legend, Shumak was discovered thanks to the curiosity of a local hunter who followed a wounded bear to gain a better knowledge of its habits and habitat. Over one hundred springs provide natural help for people wishing to improve their health. Unfortunately, a large number of springs got washed over during the 2001 summer flooding. Shumak spring waters induce unique, self-cleaning, purifying effect. It has become well known because of the unique combination of mineral springs, healthy mud and radon bath here. Crystal clear mountain water, pure air, everyday physical activities gave noticeable purifying effect. The spot definitely has high spiritual potential. I personally got about 15 minutes of nirvana-like feeling while walking to the springs early in the morning. This event took place 2 years ago and remains one of the most deep spiritual experiences I have ever had. Sayan mountains serve the natural barrier to Shumak creating additional difficulties for travelers and so reducing the number of them, as if they try to safe the place… However, rubbish around campsites could be seen. When on tour, Baikaler cares the nature by collecting the litter no matter whose… After ourselves we do leave nothing but footprints! The resort itself has a bunch of log cabins located on each bank of two Shumak rivers. Different in size cabins can accommodate from 2 to 10 people. Tourists are friendly after definition... It's common to share a cabin with other travelers. Food cooked on the open fire. Dry wood to be collected in the forest. Iron stove is inside every cabin, outside toilet is near. For regular transit travelers it is very difficult to visit Shumak owing to lack of time and need of preliminary logistics arrangements. My offer makes it possible! NB: hiking to Shumak is a long trip and a hard work (50km over the mountain pass of 2700m). Make sure you adequately realize all pros and contras of the tour AND your physical abilities. |
